What engineered wood siding is
Engineered wood siding is made from wood strands or fibers bonded with resins and treated against fungal decay and insects, then given a textured face and a primer or factory paint. LP SmartSide is a widely sold example; other makers offer similar boards.
It comes in long lap boards, panels, shakes and trim. It is lighter than fiber cement, so it is quicker to carry and cut, and it takes impacts well. Like any wood product, it lasts when it is kept painted and kept dry: cut edges sealed, gaps left where the maker says, and the boards held clear of roofs and soil.
Checklist
Details that decide how it holds up
- Sealing or priming every cut edge before installation
- Clearance from roofing, decks, patios and the ground
- Nailing and spacing as the maker's instructions require
- Flashing at windows, doors and butt joints
- The paint: factory finish, or a quality coat applied soon after installation
- The warranty terms, which usually depend on all of the above
Engineered wood in a humid climate
Most of the Upstate has a humid subtropical climate, with moisture coming off both the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico (National Weather Service). Wood products do well here when water can drain out from behind them and dry off their faces.
Ask the contractor how they handle the bottom edge of the wall and the strip above each roof line, which are the places engineered wood boards most often fail when they are installed carelessly.
Questions
Engineered Wood Siding: common questions
Is engineered wood the same as plywood siding?
No. It is a manufactured product of treated strands or fibers with an engineered face. Older plywood-type sidings behaved very differently.
Will woodpeckers or insects damage it?
The boards are treated against insects and decay, but no siding is immune to everything. Damaged spots can be cut out and replaced.
Engineered wood or fiber cement?
Both suit painted lap siding. Engineered wood is lighter and takes impacts well; fiber cement is heavier and holds a rigid line. The contractor can price both on the same visit.
