The layers you never see
Siding is the first line against rain, not the last. Water gets behind every kind of siding, so the wall needs a weather-resistive barrier (house wrap or a similar layer) lapped like shingles, with flashing at windows and doors that sends that water back out.
Insulated siding adds rigid foam to the back of the panel, or a separate foam board goes on the wall before the siding. It makes the wall stiffer and flatter and adds some insulation over the studs. It is not a substitute for the barrier behind it.
Checklist
Questions for the contractor
- Which barrier goes on, and how it is lapped and taped at seams
- How windows and doors are flashed: sill pan, sides, head
- Insulated panels or foam board, and how window and door trim is extended to suit the thicker wall
- Whether any drainage gap or drainable wrap is planned
- How the barrier ties into the roof line and the foundation
- What happens if rotted sheathing is found once the old siding is off
Humid summers, wet walls
In a humid climate, the job of the wall is as much about drying out as keeping water out. A wall that gets wet and can dry does fine; one that traps water rots.
That is why the details at windows and roof lines usually matter more than the siding product. Ask to see how the contractor flashes a window before the siding goes on.
Questions
Insulated Siding & House Wrap: common questions
Do I need house wrap?
Some kind of weather-resistive barrier belongs behind any siding. On a re-side, ask the contractor which barrier they will install, how it is lapped, and whether the permit office inspects it before the siding covers it.
Does insulated siding lower energy bills?
It adds some insulation and cuts air leaks through the wall, but how much it saves depends on the house. Ask for the product's rated value and compare it with the rest of the wall.
Can wrap go over old siding?
It can, but the usual approach is to remove the old siding so the sheathing can be inspected and repaired first.
