What Upstate storms do to siding
A National Weather Service study of the area found damaging thunderstorm wind to be the most common form of severe weather, peaking in summer, with tornadoes most frequent in spring; in the Piedmont, damaging wind is reported far more often than large hail (NWS Greenville-Spartanburg technical attachment).
For siding that means mostly wind damage: vinyl panels unlocked and torn away, trim pulled loose, and walls holed by falling limbs. A careful inspection looks beyond the obvious pieces for cracked panels, loose corners and openings where rain can now get in.
Checklist
After the storm, before the call
- Stay clear of downed power lines and call the utility about them first
- Take dated photos of every damaged wall from the ground
- Pick up loose pieces and keep them; they help match color and profile
- Cover large openings with a tarp or plastic if you can do it safely from the ground
- Note where water has come in, inside and out
- Talk to your insurer yourself if you plan to file a claim
Insurance is between you and your insurer
This site does not help with insurance claims and does not refer claim work. If you believe a storm caused the damage, contact your insurance company directly about your policy.
A contractor can describe the damage and price the repair. Be wary of anyone who knocks on the door after a storm asking you to sign before you have had time to read the contract; the contractor rules guide explains your right to cancel some home sales.
Questions
Storm & Wind Damage: common questions
Can a few storm-damaged panels be replaced?
Usually, if the color can be matched. If it cannot, contractors sometimes move matching panels from a less visible wall and put the new ones there.
Should I wait for the insurer before calling?
That is between you and your insurer. You can still have a contractor look at the damage and put a written description and price on paper.
Does hail damage vinyl siding?
It can crack or hole older, brittle vinyl and dent some other materials. In the Upstate's Piedmont, damaging wind is far more common than large hail.
